I spent the majority of the ’90s falling out of trees, eating play doh and trying to kick my best friends where it hurts the most. Needless to say, the discovery of hip-hop came a little later on in life and having not been on the cutting-edge of the genre at its most fruitful, there are plenty of well-known gems which still lay unbeknownst to me. ‘93 ’til Infinity’ by Oakland’s Souls of Mischief is one of these and I’ve been rinsing it ever since I first heard it this morning. It’s got that sunny vibe and makes me nostalgic for shit I’ve never even experienced; a minute in I was dreaming of a sunny day on the curb with a 40oz and no police hassle.
Menacing and aggressive details of slangin’ dope and shooting the shit out of everything is my usual preference when it comes to hip-hop, but this is just so relaxed I’d have to be made out of stone not to recline a little and smile.
