Rusko – Hold On (Sub Focus Remix)

This is Sub Focus’ drumstep remix of Rusko’s ‘Hold On’ and I’ve got to say, it’s a pretty delicious take on proceedings. Once again, Amber Coffman’s ’90s R&B vocals are smoother than George Clooney at an over 50s mixer and the whole thing is groovy enough to insight involuntary muscle spasms. For me however, even though it’s a decent piece of music, it’s still not quite as good as the original.

Circus mogul Doctor P has mentioned similarities to his own tune ‘Sweetshop’ but I think the comparison is a little unfair. The synths employed in that track are hardly unique and this is better anyway…oops.

Hold On, Rusko’s Back

I may have been scathing about the name of the new album and the fact that ‘Woo Boost’ sounds like a rehash of ‘Mr Chips’ but Rusko’s latest track to surface, ‘Hold On’, is pretty sick. Silvery vocals lie on a blanket of subtle bass, all punctuated by crisp percussion that sounds as sweet as an ice cube on a freshly cut lawn. It’s more of a soft garage vibe than his usual punch-in-the-nuts-and-skank material — 2007′s exquisite ‘Love is Real’ is an exception — and it’s very pleasant indeed. He should be making more stuff like this and hopefully OMG will follow the positive vibes and feature a few more flashes of brilliance.

For now, however, all we can do is lay back and relax. Well…that’s what I’m going to do anyway. I wonder if I’ll leave the house today…?

OMG Rusko, OMG OMG It’s Rusko

Rusko’s new album is going to be called OMG. I know it should really be all about the tunes, but the name is awful. If he’s trying to be cute, he’s only succeeded in making me feel sick. He may as well fuck his music career, log on to 1998 msn and ask a 14 year old girl ‘”a/s/l?” Jesus, ‘Woo Boost’ is a bag of shit too, it sounds exactly like ‘Mr. Chips’, what’s happening mate? I hope he’s taking the piss and changes OMG to You Must Be Skanky to Ride This…umm…or something good.

At least the podcast he did for Mad Decent the other day was tolerable, there’s a few interesting morsels tucked in there somewhere. For example, the fact that the album isn’t going to be purely dubstep and that some of it will stray into disco territory, that’s pretty intriguing right? Regardless, Rusko is a talented musician even if he does have a penchant for mid-range wobbly shit at times, so I’m optimistic that there will be a few decent tunes knocking about when OMG drops. For now though, we just have to make do with ‘Mr. Chips V2′…
