The last day of February saw Kahn’s first release on Punch Drunk and, characteristically for the seminal Bristol label, it was breathtaking. I reckon it might have even been better than one of the latest acts on Britain’s Got Talent and they’re like pretty good aren’t they? I thought the woman singing opera with her dog was amazing…or maybe, maybe I tried to kill myself halfway through. Anyway, the pistol from Bristol — as I shall call him, just this once — has compiled a mix for the folks over at Sonic Router and it’s a great listen. Progressing from chilled out to sinister then easing back to serenity, the 30 minute sojourn largely comprises Kahn’s own original tunes and remixes with a few choice additions from Peverelist, Zhou and Sorrow. The remix of Superisk’s ‘Find Your Way’ rears its powerful head as the undoubted highlight about halfway through and will surely have you cycling back to the drop every couple of minutes until your hair goes grey. If your hair is already grey, grab a Werther’s and lose your shit in the study while your grandchildren make muffins in the kitchen. I’m looking forward to when I can do that.
It’s still as cold as a Nazi’s heart here at the moment, so there’s really nothing else for me to do except sit inside, cover myself in wool and goose fat and pound out…uh…massive tunes. I’m sure HxDB will be excited at the prospect of me in this state hypnotically swaying to his recently unleashed Sicknote Vol. 7 mix, an hour-long blanket of swelling atmosphere and bass, and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. Packed to the rafters with unparalleled ambient dubstep, Vol. 7′s roster includes Phaelah, Desto, Headhunter, Djunya, Mount Kimbie and a number of others who have the ability to instil a feeling of nebulous calm. Particular highlights, however, come in the form of Hyetal’s ‘Secret’ and Desto’s characteristically beautiful ‘Bounce’.
I’m getting a little bit addicted to these chilled out mixes, I reckon I may soon crumble into dust and spend the rest of my existence swirling around the scene of a Constable painting. It wouldn’t be so bad I guess…
This Monday’s mix is vast. Instead of 1Xtra’s usual 60 tracks in 60 minutes, last week Crissy Criss conspired to cram in the same amount of tunes in just half the time. The finished product feels a little furious, but it’s massive nonetheless. Unsurprisingly, it comprises a huge list of tunes from a host of different artists including Alix Perez, Dillinja, Noisia, Jaydan, Heist, Taxman and countless others. Of course, this lengthy catalogue means there is a jump up angle in there for everybody. I think the whole thing is pretty huge, Crissy Criss is a sick DJ.
The file below is the full 1xtra show but if you want to skip to the mix, it starts almost exactly an hour in. A full tracklisting is available on the BBC 1Xtra site.
It may technically be Tuesday, but I’ve still not crawled into my sack for the night, so I’m going to publish this in the past and pretend I wrote it before midnight. Anyway, this week’s slice of musical mingling comes courtesy of Splinter and it’s all about that electro ruffage. Crookers, Boys Noize, Rivastarr, Jack Beats, a bit of Diplo and some other heavyweights comprise this tasty morsel and it’s sure to pop that top button and get you moving like an old lady on fire.
There’s a filthy dubstep ‘yang’ mix on the way too, so keep your ears peeled and I’ll get that up when it surfaces.
Dubstep isn’t all banging on pots and waking up the neighbours, there is some serious ambient stuff out there at the moment. Phaeleh, Kryptic Minds and Synkro are murdering the atmospherics right now and thankfully, Solitude has included them in Vol. 4 of his ambient mixes. Swirling and blended seamlessly together, this one drips into your consciousness like a melodic sedative, enveloping you in a blanket of calm. If only Hitler had slammed this on the gramaphone before he invaded Poland…
Listen/download it below, tracklisting after the jump.
If Clipz is Bruce Wayne then Redlight is Batman aka they’re exactly the same person. Redlight is what Clipz calls himself when he isn’t making drum & bass, and to be honest, I prefer him this way. Dubstep and carnival club bangers make up just a portion of his alter ego’s repertoire and most of it seems to be very upbeat and cheerful, almost reminiscent of Toddla T.
This is a short mix he did exclusively for Fact Magazine late last year and it consists solely of his own productions. Some of which are awesome — ‘Pick Up the Phone’ is pretty mad — and some of which don’t quite twang the right note. It’s still ultimately a decent mix and an interesting insight into what Clipz, usual purveyor of all things heavy, is really capable of. Fuck knows what it has to do with crab meat though.
