Joker & Rustie – Light Years Popsicle

‘Light Years Popsicle’ is a fitting title for a collaboration between Joker and Rustie, two producers whose musical personalities would perfectly assimilate into the retrofitted future of Blade Runner and/or other similar sci-fi scenarios. If Chris Tucker was here dressed as Ruby Rhod, he’d catapult this tune into the stratosphere. Or beyond into, you know, space.

Played by Plastician on his Rinse FM show a week ago, trance chords mingle with electric guitaresque synth in an epic lunar concoction evocative of hallucinatory images featuring an ’80s rockstar floating through the infinite galactic night. Or maybe that’s just me…listen below.

Joker – On My Mind (Rustie Remix)

Rustie

Yesterday saw the release of a single from 4AD featuring two utopian remixes of Joker’s ‘On My Mind’ from his recent album The Vision. The first of the duo is an orchestral and break-heavy rework by none other than Goldie and the second track, from Glasgow producer Rustie, is literally da bomb. And I don’t use that term lightly…or at least, I haven’t since the ’90s. Seriously though, it’s an absolute cracker. Which is kind of a fitting description considering it’s almost Christmas. If you bought the track, put it on a USB stick and placed it inside a cracker which you rigged in favour of your opponent’s victory, they would be on-their-knees-grateful when they found out what they’d won. Trust me, I’m a pro.

I was actually going to sit down and craft a lengthy and inspiring description of the Rustie tune, but instead I ended up watching an episode of Sharpe and completely losing myself (which tends to happen quite a lot). You should probably just listen to it below and directly immerse yourself in the kaleidoscopic goodness like an eccentric Alice in Wonderland extra with a penchant for bass.

Joker – Back in the Days (Kahn Remix)

Kahn

Even though I’m convinced that the first words uttered in this tune are “I’m on top of the game and no-one’s parsnip”, it’s worth battling through the childish mirth because, all vegetables aside, it’s rather good. A right Bristol knees up with Kahn lending a fleshy orchestral touch to Joker’s ‘Back in the Days’ from his recent album The Vision, it doesn’t actually feel hugely different, but that doesn’t really bother me because I love the original.

Anyway, it’s free to download so grab it below. Shouts to our new buddies Squeegie for getting this up before me!

Joker – The Vision

Joker - The Vision

God knows this one has been in the works for a long time. You only need to check the 27 page thread on Dubstep Forum where the first poster, in October 2010, states that he has been waiting for the album for over a year. Hell, we’ve all been waiting a long time and come the end of the month, the wait is over. Slated to drop October 31st on 4AD, The Vision is a combination of instrumental bangers and vocal collaborations with artists such as Buggsy, William Cartwright (whose name reminds me, for some reason, of William Regal) and Jessie Ware. From what I’ve heard so far, my personal favourite is ‘Milky Way’, a fairly chilled out tune which, while retaining the Joker clap, steers away from his usual distinctive synth stylings. A track which is more traditionally inclined, however, is ‘My Trance Girl’ which I’ve attached below for the princely sum of nothing. Download it, have a listen, buy the album. Simple.

Joker, Kapsize and Tron

This weekend saw the launch of Joker’s new website for Kapsize Recordings and in order to get you all hot under the collar, he’s giving away 15 signed test pressings of forthcoming single ‘Tron’. If you’ve not heard it yet, all is not lost, head over to Soundcloud and have a little listen. On the other hand, if you’ve never seen the film Tron and don’t get the reference, shame on you. You’ve probably got a girlfriend and everything. Pfft, you won’t be laughing when I get a motorbike that only goes in straight lines and have my own custom helmet with lights on it…I can’t wait for the future.

Anyway, you can enter the competition via the sick little widget below. Worth it, do it.

Joker’s Gully Goon Estate

I don’t know how he does it, but Joker just keeps throwing out amazing tunes at an unbelievable rate. He’s like a supernatural sushi chef who slices tuna thinner than anyone else believes is possible. Elijah & Skilliam played his new collaboration with Terror Danjah, ‘Gully Goon Estate’, on their Rinse show last Tuesday and it’s huge, as you would expect. Occurring just under 16 minutes into the mix, it hits you in the head like a flaming molotov, making you want to pistol-whip your Grandma and skank until your little legs are mere bloody stumps. Hopefully this will make it on to the album, it’s dirt.
