Over the last couple of years they’ve put out some great tunes by the likes of Martin Kemp and label-heads Shortstuff and Brackles and yesterday they informed me that there’s more inspiring stuff on the way from DJ Dom and Dark Sky. It seems that these blunted robots aren’t as lazy as they sound! Anyway, it’s good to see the Midlands being represented by more than just legally made Stilton and Robin Hood, now go forth and skank.

Of course, you’ll start doing all that in a few weeks, first it’s time to listen to a bit of muzak and get down to the local for a few swifties. Lucky for you, influential duo Elijah and Skilliam are here to help and have assembled a new year mix brimming with a tasty selection of grime tunes from the freshest producers the scene has to offer. Admittedly, a mix comprised solely of grime isn’t something I’d usually tackle but this is surprisingly sick and I listened to the entire thing, twice. It’s not all multiple claps and overused strings and I bet you a whole bag of quavers that Royal T’s remix of ‘It’s Wiley’ will have you bobbing up and down like a rubber duck in a fat man’s bath. Crazy Times Vol. 2 — recorded in prison — is a 23 track mixtape which is now available to buy from all good retailers (well…UK Record Shop). In it Titch retreads the ever more obscure path of grime and also strays into hip-hop territory, spitting venom and heartfelt emotion almost in equal part.

Admittedly I’ve not had a chance to really get to know it yet, but judging by a couple of hours listening today, it [almost] lives up to the hype. As lyrically powerful as he ever was, perhaps even more so now that his claims are backed by reality, Titch has undoubtedly assembled some weighty tracks brimming with genius one-liners… I suppose it all begs the question as to how good the release would have been were he a free man…I guess we’ll never know. Crazy, eh?

I’ll post again once I’ve had time to thoroughly listen to it, but for now, here’s a tune to warm you up.

It’s a phone interview — because, you know, he’s in prison — so the quality isn’t exactly amazing, but if you hold your earlobes like an incompetent talent show contestant, most of it’s audible. It runs just over 20 minutes and is definitely worth getting your ears around, especially for the nuggets of respect afforded to Dizzee ya get me? I’m hyped for this mixtape…

One of Birmingham’s finest, Romo dropped the Jam Your Hype mixtape last week and anyone who has a working set of ears should shut up and snag that shit because it’s completely free. Put those benefit pennies back in the swear jar, because you can buy some Super Tennants and listen to music too, honestly! Comprising elements of grime, dubstep, UK funky and hip-hop, it’s a pretty varied release and Romo seems to have a bottomless supply of sick bars. I’d write some here, but it wouldn’t really have the same effect and my butler is setting out supper anyway. Just download it.

Oh well, it’s here now and all I can really say about it is that it’s an exhibition of pure talent. Ed beatboxes the percussion, plays guitar, sings, raps and well, it sounds a little bit shit if I try and write it down, but it’s fucking amazing when you watch it. So good that Smokey Barz of YouTube grime fame posted it in amongst the street freestyles he gathers. That’s got to be good for a ginger kid with a guitar, right? Anyway, I’m tired, I’ve been as confused as an elephant in a black hole all week and it’s a miracle that you got anything out of me today. Just watch the video and behold the glory. The glory!

He’s like a supernatural sushi chef who slices tuna thinner than anyone else believes is possible. Elijah & Skilliam played his new collaboration with Terror Danjah, ‘Gully Goon Estate’, on their Rinse show last Tuesday and it’s huge, as you would expect. Occurring just under 16 minutes into the mix, it hits you in the head like a flaming molotov, making you want to pistol-whip your Grandma and skank until your little legs are mere bloody stumps. Hopefully this will make it on to the album, it’s dirt.

The Observer Music Monthly placed The Streets’ Original Pirate Material at the top of their ‘Albums of the Decade’ list and for that, I would not hesitate to follow them into the depths of Mordor and back.

So, what’s the point of this typically nonsensical preamble? I want you to read Dan Hancox’s article ’2009: The Year Grime Began to Pay’, that’s the point. It’s basically an exploration of how and why grime — or whatever it became depending on how you look at it — was so successful in 2009. There’s even a guide included at the end which selects and explains a few of grime’s defining moments. It’s all very interesting.

I’ve added a Crazy Titch video after the jump. He was a good rapper, even if he couldn’t distinguish between right and wrong.
