Zomby – Nothing EP

Zomby - Nothing

Today, not only did I see a red squirrel (which is always awesome), I also saw the announcement of Zomby’s forthcoming EP entitled Nothing. Slated to drop on November 28th, it’s going to be issued on limited edition white vinyl and will be “considerably lighter in shade” than his last release, Dedication. By “lighter in shade”, whoever wrote the article over at 4AD was referring to the tone of the music, not just the lighter colour of the vinyl…although instead of explaining that, I probably should have just picked a different quote. Anyway, a stream of the opening track, ‘Labyrinth’, was also made available and by made available, I mean you can listen to it and by you can listen to it, I mean it’s below and you can press play and have its beautiful ’90s throwback vibe in your ear holes. This isn’t really going anywhere. Head over to 4AD for some more info on the release and listen to the track below.

Lana Del Rey – Video Games (Joy Orbison Remix)

Lana Del Rey

Everybody has been remixing Lana Del Rey’s ‘Video Games’ recently and by everybody, I mean Jamie Woon and now, Joy Orbison (there has actually been loads more, but these are the only two I’ve posted). Where Woon’s version splices, transposes and generally focuses on switching up the vocals — in a beautiful manner, I must add — Orbison has kept the original vocal track complete and married it to a characteristically majestic house inspired beat with rather exquisite results. Have a listen while simultaneously admiring a picture of Miss Rey. How nice.

Joker – The Vision

Joker - The Vision

God knows this one has been in the works for a long time. You only need to check the 27 page thread on Dubstep Forum where the first poster, in October 2010, states that he has been waiting for the album for over a year. Hell, we’ve all been waiting a long time and come the end of the month, the wait is over. Slated to drop October 31st on 4AD, The Vision is a combination of instrumental bangers and vocal collaborations with artists such as Buggsy, William Cartwright (whose name reminds me, for some reason, of William Regal) and Jessie Ware. From what I’ve heard so far, my personal favourite is ‘Milky Way’, a fairly chilled out tune which, while retaining the Joker clap, steers away from his usual distinctive synth stylings. A track which is more traditionally inclined, however, is ‘My Trance Girl’ which I’ve attached below for the princely sum of nothing. Download it, have a listen, buy the album. Simple.

xxxy Triangle Mix

xxxy

In order to attract the bass music masses to their Facebook page — which includes you mr/mrs/master/ms/miss reader — London night Triangle is offering up a download of an hour long mix from Manchester’s xxxy. There’s no tracklist provided so you’ll have to head into the affair blind, armed only with my assurance that it’s a rather delightful listen. Of course, I have steered you wrong before, remember that time I told you to go through a door because I had “accidentally” forgotten I’d left a bucket of flour above it? OOPS [insert laugh track].

To get it, just “like” the Triangle Facebook page and click the “xxxy DJ Set Free Download” link in the left-hand column. I suppose you could have figured that one out yourself really…

Introducing Josef

Not only did I invent sliced [banana] bread, I am now bringing you an introduction to Josef, a producer hailing from my own quaint home town located deep in the Leicestershire jungle. A purveyor of understated beats, his tunes exude a laid-back optimism that draws me away from my constant obsession with moody landscape and inspires my stony mouth to curl up into a twisted smile (imagine the Joker, but drunk). ‘Lift’, the tune I’ve attached below, is his most recent upload and its buoyant quality conjures images of soft-focus sunny days, the ones I used to enjoy before I realised it was time to get a job and face up to reality. Also attached is a remix of Zero 7′s ‘Swing’ which takes the pace out of the original and hits an altogether more calming and beautiful note. Both tracks are pretty damn exquisite and I implore you to thoroughly wrap your ears around them. I also think you should track Josef’s future movements like you tracked your ex-girlfriend until her current boyfriend realised and beat the crap out of you. Yeah. Anyway, put Josef in your ‘One To Watch’ notebook and if you don’t have one yet, get one.

Jack Sparrow & Ruckspin – Author

Following their previous collaboration on Get Darker’s This is Dubstep 2011, Leeds based producers Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin recently came together to form Author, a project focused on experimenting with dubstep, collaborating with live musicians and drawing on a wide range of eclectic influences, such as Kruder and Dorfmeister’s infamous K&D Sessions and Cinematic Orchestra. The impatient among us — aka me — won’t have to wait long for some substantial output because their self-titled debut is set to drop next month on Pinch’s Tectonic imprint and judging by the current samples I’ve heard, it should be a pretty legendary affair.

To summarise: Author drops November 14 on Tectonic and the tracklist lies after the jump. Big.
