L-Wiz: Lords of the Sub
Not really had time to shake a leg to anything new this week so instead I’ve just been listening to old L-Wiz tunes. Unsung lords of the stripped-down sub-heavy kingdom, their music somehow conveys a sense of claustrophobic atmosphere whilst managing to maintain a minimal dignity. It’s hard to describe, as you can tell, but pretty evident when you’re elbow deep in ‘Smogged’ or ‘Egyptic’. I guess you could say it’s dubstep at a fundamental level; sparse percussion and an unsullied sub as warm and comforting as a head full of honey and porridge.
Despite my gushing worship of their early stuff, I’m not a huge fan of their more recent releases, which stray into convoluted territory. They are, however, still prone to flashes of their previous brilliance and for that, I am thankful.
Oh and they’re Swedish too. So…that’s something, right?
