dOP – Penguin EP

It would appear that dOP have been busy. Only it’s that weird French kind of busy where you haven’t got a clue what they’re up to because they shroud everything in a fog of nonchalant mystique. WGVINYL02, otherwise known as Penguin EP sees dOP getting together with new and old friends alike, including Nôze, Seuil and Wareika. Taking the track ‘Les Fils Du Calvaire’, made in collaboration with everyone’s favourite cheeky frog Nôze, it is clear that Penguin EP is the most dancefloor-orientated effort we’ve seen in awhile.

There’s no messing around with a fit and healthy kick backed up by tasty, pounding bass from the word go. Don’t worry though because the meandering moans, haphazard horns and sneaky synths that we all know and love creep in at the optimum moments. dOP and co. are certainly representing the progressive French house scene far more convincingly than myself and those shitty GCSE creative writing techniques. Alliteration anyone?

dOP haven’t released anything short of genius for as long as I can remember (and I can remember when this was all fields). So many different aspects of their music make my little brain happy but we haven’t got all day so I’ll be concise. They manage to create that crucial organic depth, overlooked by so many in the electronic music universe these days, before laying on vocals that can be interpreted by each unique listener because they’re mental Franglais nonsense. Listening to select works of dOP is like sitting in long grass on a summer’s day playing Chinese whispers with your best friends. If that’s not enough, the final track is called Glory Hole.

7digital aren’t actually selling Penguin EP right now, let’s write a letter of complaint! Searching for ‘penguin’ brings up The Penguin Café Orchestra which is alright I guess because they’re bloody awesome too.

Hi there curious one. Bonus nutty granola gem just for you right here. As far as I can work out, The Zufall Big Band is/was a little side-project dreamt up by the guys of dOP when they were tripping balls on a veritable concoction of naughty naughty substances. If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if you took David Gilmour and Roger Waters (from Pink Floyd you idiot) hostage and forced them to make house music then listen to ‘panne de sens’ on their MySpace. It’s also the soundtrack to the crack-doc video below.
