Chip tunes are bad ass. Seriously, some people listen to them and don't understand the nostalgic joy they bring. I mean, who doesn't remember mammoth sessions on Streets of Rage or Paperboy? Pfft, those same people would no doubt scoff at the sheer genius that is Sabrepulse's latest release, Turbo City. 'White Tiger' is an immense song, 'The Manhattan Transfer' is also unashamedly sick and 'Plug in Trance (Kate's Remix)' is insane. You want to know what's even better? You can download it for free...that's £0.00, yup $0.00.

I wish I still had my Mega Drive, I'd pretend it was alive and eat dinner with it sitting at the table, I'd make it wear a napkin and everything...I'm pretty awesome if you think about it.

I've been coding the new version of the site which, hopefully, will go live some time during this week or the start of next. It looks nice, like KFC food on tv adverts...although, unlike that, it still looks good when it's sitting in your lap, not like a soppy mess of low grade hormone mush. Honest.

If you thought this was going to be about finding unknown treasures at the bottom of your beer bottle then you'll be disappointed, kind of. Hidden Depths, a series of 5 one-off super secret squirrell gigs across London and Manchester, is back with no less secrets or squirrells than last year. I say anywhere but if you check out the official site there's loads of information on there (and it's got a cool wood effect with a spotlight thing on an iphone, a laptop and some headphones so I mean I can totally like relate to this idea). It's all kicking off between June 16th and September 28th with Wall of Sound taking over next Thursday.
'The full extent of a Hidden Depths line-up is only ever revealed on the night. So as well as our fantastic headliners, expect plenty of great surprises, a host of exclusive performances and maybe the odd collaboration – just to keep you guessing.' Last year saw performances from DJ Yoda, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and Warp Films with surprise appearances from Kid Koala and Jarvis Cocker. It's all rather exciting and we here at boxmusique would obviously be snapping up tickets like demented turtles if it wasn't for the fact that we're so poor we have to sneak into other people's houses to put our Happy Shopper bread in someone else's toaster.

Because you're reading boxmusique and not www.spoonfeedtheretards.com here's some links so you can go away and get all hyped up somewhere else. I've just woken up and can't be doing with all that right now.

It goes without saying that Fabric are experts at attracting the biggest and best names to craft excellent mixes for them, we need only look back a month to recall DJ Yoda's masterfully forged compilation of prime cuts for Fabriclive.39. This instalment was to be no different and originally fell at the feet of Parisian electro duo Justice, but after their effort was deemed unworthy, the baton was passed on to Dutch darkstep outfit Noisia, the sinister faces of drum & bass. They, of course, set to work in what I can only imagine to be some sort of poorly lit underground dungeon/studio and concocted a filthy mix comprising largely their own tunes but punctuated with some collaborations and breaks cuts from other notably twisted producers. The resultant spawn was dubbed Fabriclive.40, a devilishly infectious potion of aural corruption.
Whilst some mixes allow you to sit back and let an eclectic melange of different sounds circulate your system, Fabriclive.40 is much more involved, assaulting you from all sides and forcing you to take notice of each and every tune. Whether it's the breakneck stylings of Spor's remix of The Qemists' 'Stompbox', the thudding sub of Noisia's own 'Square Fet' or the ridiculously addictive screech of 'Stigma', there will be little that will not filter into your subconscious over the next 29 tracks. Turn it up loud and I dare you not to become consumed.

Obviously with their name on the cover, you'd expect Noisia to construct the mix largely from their own material, but their reliance on such tracks is almost egotistically heavy and causes the mix to suffer from a recurrence of noticeably similar drum loops. This issue is also apparent in their collaborations with The Upbeats who seem religiously addicted to the same patterns time and time again. Of course, whilst variation is often a good thing, here there seems to be a method to the repetition, such like minded tracks are never placed next to each other and thus create an almost phasing effect as we dive in and out of different styles, visiting and re-visiting.

Having said that though, Noisia's inclusions from their own vast catalogue of tunes are primarily excellent and we are treated to some premium cuts including the epic 'Seven Stitches', a horribly heavy Upbeats collab 'Creep Out' and the electro trespasser 'Brown Time'. The external choices which did manage to make it to the table are also unsurprisingly immense, most notably 'Mordez Moi' from Spor, an absolutely epic breaks force lauded over by a punchy synth which resonates in your brain like a mad man and is seamlessly merged into 'Seven Stitches' for the undoubted high point of the entire mix.

Despite a heavy dependence on their own songs, Noisia have still managed to honour the Fabric name with a filthy and entropic compilation of some incredible tunes. Dark and dirty may not be the language of the masses, but for the select few who understand the nature of its possession, Fabriclive.40 will enchant, excite and captivate. Darkstep demiurges they be, chaotic constructors of sinister excellence.

8/10

Oh my God, Scarlett Johansson may be a decent actress but she's absolutely awful at singing. Seriously, she can't hold a note at all. I just watched the video for her song 'Falling Down' and at times I thought she was acting like she was dehydrated or had tonsillitis or something. Who the hell agrees to produce and release stuff like this? They know she's terrible, they've added reverb to her voice in order to try and mask how retarded she sounds, but it doesn't work. I bet she reckons her sound is edgy and new, well I'm edgy...or at least my knife is and I've just bought a plane ticket to LA and an action man stealth suit, it has fake padded muscles.

Video after the jump, it's painful, don't say I didn't warn you.

First you get the raw audio file, then you pour it into the spoon and slowly heat it up whilst teasing it with a needle. The next step is to eliminate any lumps and draw it up into the chamber, give it a textbook flick, grip the belt wrapped around your arm in your [few] remaining teeth and shoot that shit directly into your veins, leaving a nice set of tracks wherever the entry point may be. Ooooh, how sweet the scrobble has become! Wait...what?! What's heroin? I'm talking about last.fm and the fact that a few times a day I tend to check up on statistics that I already know because when I'm listening to music, you know, I'm actually listening to it, but I still seem drawn to the drab crimson interface anyway. Well, lucky for me the guys over at the home of audioscrobbling have just rolled out a beta version of the new-look site for their paying subscribers and if all goes well, joe public shall be reaping the benefits of clean design soon too. Read more over at the Last.fm blog.

Don't worry by the way, I once looked at drugs in a magazine and fainted. I spent a week in bed recuperating and can now only drink milk and eat fruit pastilles, a little like a badly treated toddler. Over and out.

Legendary director and all-round badass Martin Scorsese has unfortunately had to pull out of directing the upcoming Bob Marley biopic due to 'scheduling conflicts'. Thankfully however, instead of Uwe Boll stepping in to make a hash of the whole project (best joke ever?), Jonathan Demme has been assigned to take Marty's place. If you're clueless and have already reached for IMDB then shame on you because Demme directed such classics as The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia and The Manchurian Candidate. He also recently directed Neil Young: Heart of Gold, which I haven't seen but critics seemed to taken a shine to, so he's obviously pretty good at this legend/music/movie crossover malarkey. Stay tuned for more details as the project develops...

Despite various internet sources bearing headlines indicating that the Chilis have 'disbanded' or 'split' it seems that they are merely taking a break after what appears to have been a 10 year run of solid work. "We took a very long time to make the 'Stadium Arcadium' record (released in 2006). It was a gruelling, long haul and it followed two other very long hauls, 'Californication' (1999) and 'By the Way' (2002)." Anthony Kiedis told Rolling Stone. "So we didn't really stop until the tour ended last year. We were all emotionally and mentally zapped at the end of that run. The discussion was, 'Let's not do anything Red Hot Chili Peppers-related for a minimum of one year, and just live and breathe and eat and learn new things.'"

Maybe they can use the year to reflect on how crap they are live and come to terms with the fact that nobody wants to listen to Flea play the same bass loop a thousand times for ten minutes. In an unrelated story, I once found some fleas in my trousers...well, the doctor said they were crabs but I knew better!

Regardless of my negligence, this is Armitage Shanks' appropriately titled 'April Fools Mix', a deftly spread commix of breakbeat's bread and butter comprising some ridiculously infectious tunes. Would you like to know how bored I am? Bored enough to acknowledge the fact that Pendulum are going on tour at the end of this year. Seriously, the less I hear about Pendulum the better. Sure they've come out with some pretty serious tunes in the past but their recent stuff is absolutely awful and as such, I feel it's only right to boycott them until they produce something worth listening to. I think the Pendulum has well and truly swung into the 'shit' aspect of the scale. Tour dates after the jump.
